As Spring approaches, many people take down their feeders. Not coincidentally, right around the same time, a few bird-seed deals pop up briefly at Amazon—presumably a sign that the company packaging the seed wants to clear out their inventory of last years’ seed while there are still a few people they can sell it to.
For the un-initiated… waste-free means no big seed hulls to litter your patio or deck. Those of you who feed birds and who favor no-waste seed blends know that these mixes are considerably more expensive than "ordinary" bird seeds; sometimes $2-$3/pound, especially in smaller quantities. This deal comes in at under a buck a pound, and according to that triple-camel price-tracking site, this is a historic low price for this particular product.
Those who wish to nit-pick the deal by saying that this mix has millet seeds in it— which technically are not hull-less— do have a valid point. I just ask that you do us the favor of pointing out a millet-free no-waste mix at this price point, or less. A tip of the hat if you can! Pure hulled sunflower kernels are probably the ideal waste free seed…but it’s a lot more expensive. Personally, it’s not the tiny, tiny millet seed hulls I mind sweeping off my deck— its sunflower and safflower.
And needless to say, if you have Prime, getting "free" shipping on something weighing 20 pounds ain’t bad (cat litter deals come to mind).
Now if you just want some cheap, generic birdseed shipped to your house, and don’t care about the waste-free feature, here’s a random offering I spotted on Amazon: this 10-pound bag of cherry-flavored mixed seed for $9.98 . I don’t get the cherry flavoring idea, but it has good reviews overall, and it can be ordered by Subscribe and Save also.
