Bestbuy has the GL502VT-BSI7N27 on clearance for $959.99. This one has an i7-6700HQ, 12GB DDR4 (8GB is soldered, and there is one slot for a max of 16GB), a 3GB nVidia 970M, a 1 TB hard drive (5400, and no ssd, but m.2 2280 slot available). The screen is an unimpressive 15.6" 1920×1080 IPS LED panel (LGD044F, according to it’s device ID…it’s a bit dim and the colors are meh, but it’s not horrible). It comes with Windows 10 Home.
The open box (excellent condition) is 767.99, and the certified excellent open box is 815.99. As a note, Asus Accidental Damage Protection doesn’t cover open box.
This model has a USB C (which is not Thunderbolt 3), red backlit keys, and an Intel 8260 dual band ac wifi card. There is also a full size HDMI and (for some reason) a Mini DisplayPort, along with 2 USB 3′s, an actual Gb ethernet jack and a MMC/SD slot.
I don’t think the full clearance price is worth it, but I picked up the open box. I didn’t want to pay $1000 for a laptop, but wanted a decent discrete GPU so it won’t be worthless for web surfing in three years. The display is probably it’s worst drawback, and I don’t find it particularly offputting (though I wouldn’t want to use it for graphics/professional work).
