Got skills? Bring your big idea to life with Alexa and reap the benefits. U.S. developers can now participate in a milestone-based promotion to thank you for creating engaging skills that help make Alexa even smarter. Developers have from now until the end of 2018 to achieve each of the milestones.
Build Your First Alexa Skill: Get started with the Alexa Skills Kit. Publish your first Alexa skill and earn a custom Alexa developer t-shirt. Log in to the developer portal and start building your first skill today.
Build a Multimodal Experience: Publish a skill for Alexa-enabled devices with screens, like Echo Show or Echo Spot, using at least one template. Attract 50 unique customers per month for the first three months after publication and earn an Echo Spot. Learn more about building voice-first experiences for devices with screens here.
Build a Skill with the Gadgets Skill API: Turn an Alexa device into a hub for interactive play. Publish a skill using the Gadgets Skill API and earn a 2-pack of Echo Buttons. Learn more about the Gadgets Skill API to get started.
Apply to each milestone once you meet all the qualifications. Use our templates to get started quickly, then build the skill of your daydreams. Once you publish your skills, don’t forget to promote your skills to increase usage so you can earn the sustained engagement promotion. To increase engagement, distribute your skill globally to reach users worldwide who’ve configured their Alexa-enabled devices to use a language that your skill supports. Now Amazon has three simultaneous Alexa skill developer promotions that run through the end of the year.
Amazon sells the 2-pack of Echo Buttons for $20, and the Echo Spot for $130.
The last (and only) time Amazon offered a free Echo Spot in a U.S. skill developer promotion was in April, when you had to get 1000 unique customers in the first 30 days. This time, you just need to get 50 customers a month for 3 months, but the skill has to be for devices with screens, which may limit the audience (though you may be able to use skills for screens in the Alexa and Amazon Android and iOS apps.)
Currently, Amazon seems to list only 50 Alexa skills that use Echo Buttons. All but one appear to be games. I couldn’t tell from the listing what the non-game uses an Echo Button for.
