After almost a year of researching, I finally bit the bullet on buying a home standby generator. I’m planning for a self install with my plumber running the natural gas line. Reasons we went with the 11kw:
1) Its the smallest 2 cylinder generac, with the 2 cylinder models tending to be more reliable. This is based on my research on various forums, talking to a local installer, and the fact that this generac offer for the free 10 year warranty starts with the 11kw (which I think tends to support the models smaller than 11kw are less reliable)
2) We did not care about running central AC on the generator, so a bigger model did not make sense for us. Not only do the bigger models more expensive, but they also use much more natural gas even when they have a low load on them.
It looks like all the major sites are offering the 10%off and 10 year warranty, so I’m assuming this deal is directly from generac. Shipping always seems to be free
We ultimately bought ours from ziller because they run a fantastic forum for free which helps all comers with gernator related questions and troubleshooting
As an aside, if you are planning for a self install, I would highly recommend using the generac wire My electrical inspector said they were not necessary and the I could combine off the shelf cable from any electrical supply store to save money. At the end of the day, running separate wires was confusing and didn’t seem worth the savings
