And might this factory be a portal to somewhere else?

Honestly pretty average. The first part of it felt very much like a Harry Potter ripoff. The protagonist was likable enough and had some ok traits, but some of the decision making he makes seems odd at time even for a young child. The main issue I took was the main climax of the story. It makes absolutely zero sense even within the concept of the magical world built. So much effort was spent explaining how both the physics and the magic are intertwined and yet the primary event doesn't even make sense from a physics perspective. I won't go into details because spoilers, but it was very frustrating to read.

I enjoyed this book overall, but it was a bit immature in basic construction. However, being written for tweens I would say it was well constructed. I was appalled at the many similarities it had to Harry Potter - felt like a lack of individual creativity. However once I got into part two it really soared in interest. Lots of elements that would really make it exciting for a reading crowd Oliver's age. Can't wait for my son to read it. I DO wish the author had left out all involvement of dating.

I'm saddened that I could not get into this book. "Harry Potter" was just so much better -more fun, more magical, more imaginative and so well written that the readers didn't need to suspend belief-we just believed! This story wasn't fun and left me feeling kind of icky and creepy. Other reviewers seem to adore it so you'll have to judge for yourself. It was definitely NOT my cup of tea - or draught of potion, if you will. (*snicker)
