This is very recent movie documenting the moon landing with restored recently found 65mm film that has a 99% rating at Rotten Tomatoes and 90% audience rating.
And sure beats anything we have seen to date regarding this historic event.
I can still recall watching it at home with my parents and taking an 8mm movie of the images on the TV screen with our Bell & Howell 8mm movie camera. A funny thing happened when we developed the film for the reel was double-exposed and in the middle of watching the three ring circus (Barnum and Bailey’s) performance at the Assembly Hall in Champaign, Illinois, here comes the astronauts bouncing through in B&W on the color capture of the circus! An instant family classic. The film itself was 25′ long and you were suppose to turn the reel over at the end of 25′ and shoot the other side for the final 25′ of the 50′ reel. However, we must have turned the reel around/over twice…
Anyway, to a space obsessed 15 year old kid, the moon landing was the highlight of my life back then…
More details on the digital documentary:
From director Todd Douglas Miller (DINOSAUR 13) comes a cinematic event 50 years in the making. Crafted from a newly discovered trove of 65mm footage, and more than 11,000 hours of uncatalogued audio recordings, APOLLO 11 takes us straight to the heart of NASA’s most celebrated mission—the one that first put men on the moon, and forever made Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin into household names. Immersed in the perspectives of the astronauts, the team in Mission Control, and the millions of spectators on the ground, we vividly experience those momentous days and hours in 1969 when humankind took a giant leap into the future.
