That said, building this set was so much fun. The end product is beautiful. It's sleek, it's big, and it'll definitely be a show-piece in any room you put it. In comparison to other sets I've built, it's not easy. It's a very intricate build, and instructions must be followed very closely. If a single piece is placed incorrectly, there's a high probability that you'll have to disassemble a significant chunk to correct your error. While building, I would closely inspect my work every few pages. The innards of the rocket are tightly knit and closely aligned, and they must be absolutely correct for the exterior pieces to fit properly. Don't hesitate to double or triple check your work as you progress.
I built the set over the course of a week...basically 2 bags per day. There are 12 bags total, each with a similar number of pieces. In total, I spent about 4 hours building/inspecting. It's a really well-thought out build...different than any other I've experienced. Piecing it together, it seems flimsy as you start each section. Eventually sections fully come together using interesting techniques, and wind up being extremely solid. The end result winds up being a very, very solid rocket.
This set is great in every way. If you're an adult fan of LEGO, you'll love it. If you're a parent whose child likes LEGO, this would be a great set to build with kids. It would expose them to techniques and designs that are likely not found in many other sets.
It's been discontinued for several years now, so availability is low and the price has inflated, but to me it was still 100% worth it. If you like space and rockets, and you have the chance to pick up this bad boy - pull the trigger. Do not even hesitate.
Oh, and it has 1969 pieces! I mean - how freakin cool is that!!
I'm not Lego-opposed or unfamiliar with putting things together, but I have to say I was absolutely blown away by the apparent Quality Assurance that went into the overall EXPERIENCE of this set. I'm not up to date on modern Lego - I'm not an enthusiast - but everything from the manual, to the compartmentalized packages-in-steps of pieces was just perfect. It's no puzzle putting this thing together, daunting as it may seem with it's nearly 2000 pieces. The instructions are clear, distinct, and delineated into clear stages of building. I was never (not once!) confused or lost while building this and each step was an absolute delight. There are no stickers or decals or any fussy touch-ups needed either: every decal on the final product is pre-printed directly onto a piece.
So what of the finished product? Check for yourself, I'm sure there are tons of photos on this very product listing. It's impressively detailed and quite striking in scale. I don't often splurge on this type of thing, but Lego Ideas sets are now 100% on my radar for future purchases if they all have this much care and attention put into their manufacture.
