About this ebook

Neil Gaiman's vision of the Marvel Universe in the year 1602! The year is 1602, and strange things are stirring in England. In the service of Queen Elizabeth, court magician Dr. Stephen Strange senses that the bizarre weather plaguing the skies above is not of natural origin. Her majesty's premier spy, Sir Nicholas Fury, fends off an assassination attempt on the Queen by winged warriors rumored to be in service to a mad despot named Doom. News is spreading of "witchbreed" sightings - young men bearing fantastic superhuman powers and abilities. And in the center of the rising chaos is Virginia Dare, a young girl newly arrived from the New World, guarded by a towering Indian warrior. Can Fury and his allies find a connection to these unusual happenings before the whole world ends? Collects Marvel 1602 #1-8.

Disappointing! How do you write a story about superheroes without fighting or super powers? If you're not a mutant, then no powers for you. Peter Parker is little more than a squire to Nick Fury's version of being the sheriff of Nottingham or something. Dr. Strange is barely a mystic. As for the whole New World thread? Nothing is gained from it. If you want to see Spidey remain as Peter Parker, Daredevil as a wandering minstrel, and Dr Strange as nothing more than a pseudo-scientist, then have at it. Maybe X-Men or Fantastic Four fans will like this, but I sure didn't.

The characters were uninventive. They were simple recreations of their future selves with only minor name changes. No introduction of new characters or powers. I wish more RnD went into the characters.

I am not a comics reader, so I have no real history with these characters. But I enjoyed the seeing and re-imagination of characters I only knee thru movies ...
