The Sounds of the '70s Return

Combining elements from some of the most sought-after analog synthesizers ever made, the Behringer Crave semi-modular analog synthesizer delivers big sound design potential in a convenient module format. The core of Crave's sound is based on a VCO design inspired by the famous Prophet synthesizer, and a four-pole (24dB) lowpass filter inspired by the legendary Moog sound. A built-in 32-step sequencer is ready to perform, complete with 64 onboard storage slots for your sequences. And for more synth voices, you can chain multiple Crave modules together for up to 16-voice polyphony. If you've been looking for new ways to create with classic synth sounds, check out the Behringer Crave semi-modular analog synthesizer module.

And sounds from the '80s and '90s, too

Some of the most popular and iconic music of the '80s and '90s from Michael Jackson, Madonna, Dr. Dre, and Radiohead leveraged vintage synths from the '70s. The Behringer Crave features the same authentic 3340 voltage-controlled oscillator found on the original synths it's based on, complete with pulse and sawtooth waveform outputs, as well as voltage-controlled filters and amplifiers. The tuning range allows you to spread the two waveforms up to an octave apart, and a Shape switch allows you to select from narrow, square, or wide pulse widths.

Create a monster with 16-voice Poly Chain capability

As a single-voice analog synth with vivid oscillators, a delightfully fat filter, external audio input, and a ton of patch points, the Crave synth module represents big value on its own. And with support for up to 16 voices in Poly Chain mode, you can keep adding modules to your rig to add more sonic potential. Simply connect each Crave module to the previous module's Poly Chain output to add another synth voice.

Ready for Eurorack

The Behringer Crave module is a sweet synth for desktop use on its own — and it really shines when you start patching it in with other modular synth gear. With a ton of patch points to play with — including 18 inputs and 14 outputs — and ample controls for hands-on sound shaping, the Crave module will definitely get a lot of use in your productions.

Behringer Crave Synthesizer Module Features:

  • Analog synthesizer module inspired by classic '70s synthesizers
  • True analog signal path with voltage-controlled oscillators, filters, and amplifiers
  • Fat-sounding oscillator offers pulse and triangle waveform outputs, plus a noise generator

A Moog Mother 32 and more!

Quick background, I'm a 20+ year former Recording Engineer and Synthesizer owner and programmer since 1972. When I began to build my new Music Production Workstation in our homes Music Room a year and a half ago I started out looking at Synthesizers Models that I had either owned or worked quite a bit with in the 1970's and early 80's. My first purchases were Behringer's ARP 2600 Blue Marvin, Pro-1, K2, Model D because they fit that criteria. Oh I did also get the Neutron because it is a Synth of its own kind. I also included a Moog Matriarch because I wanted the true Moog experience and sound.

I had looked at the Behringer CRAVE but not too closely, not really sure why but kept it on my possible list for the future.
Fast forward.... over the past year and an half I've added more "Clones" from Roland's Boutique Series, KORG Volca FM2 and Sample2, and a few newer Synths like a HydraSynth, Digitone MicroFreak, 2 Pocket Operators as well as some Virtual Software Synths. I have to admit it is a bit of an addiction. While browsing around Sweetwater's site I noticed the CRAVE had a price reduction which made me take a closer look at it again.

After reading and watching several reviews I didn't realize just how much of a "Clone" it was to the Moog Mother 32 (which was also on my list of possible Synths to get but I felt the price was a bit too steep for what it offered)). I guess when I first looked at the CRAVE I just wasn't focused on it.

In some of my direct listening comparisons I could barely discern any measurable sonic differences. Yes I know the Behringer Oscillator is based on the 3340 but Moog specs only state the Mother 32 uses a 2 waveform "Classic Moog Oscillator". Well listening to them they sound VERY similar. They both use the same 24dB/octave Lowpass/Highpass Ladder Filter with Resonance, and Modulation. The Sequencer is also identical and just as easy to program. Some people have noted that the CRAVE's Buttons have a clicking sound, yes there is an ever so slight click but personally I think they are more tactile and better quality than the Moog mother 32. The CRAVE also has both MIDI IN and OUT.

I find the layout of the CRAVE's controls to be much more logical, same with the Patch Bay, it is so much easier to tell what each patch point does.
Add to the list the option to use Behringer's SynthTribe Application to program the Sequencer, save and load them, perform Factory Resets and more.

Bottom line , now that I've spent 2 full days with it, the CRAVE is everything the Moog Mother 32 is and more at a fraction of the cost. For those who only want the "Real"Moog, I say go for it but for me the CRAVE meets all of my needs.

Oh, and if you look at my attached image in my review you will see it is mounted in a 19 inch Rack above my Neutron. I found the "Rack Ears" for the CRAVE on EBAY.

Buy it now! Best synth for the money period, Build quality is top notch and the nobs feel excellent.

I bought mine from Germany since they are not available here in the U.S yet and it was worth it big time. There are tons of videos on this unit online but until you get your hands on it and start jamming you can't tell what you're missing out on. Buy it and I promise you'll be pleased. You can Transpose in real-time using the 32 step sequencer the VCO sounds incredible. Pair this thing with a Model D and you have yourself a winning combo. I'll buy another one when they are available on sweetwater.

Good things in small packages

The Crave exceeded my expectations. There is a lot of goodness packed into this synth box The construction is quality the knobs have no wiggle play, the chassis is solid and feels more like quality rather than other lightweight plastic synths. There are a lot of hidden aspects and everyday I am discovering new sounds with this instrument. I own several synths and just starting a new Eurorack with the Behringer products as recently I ordered a Neutron to add to the Crave…..Sweetwater is great!! Everything you need with fast service and support!!
Music background: Started saxophone at age 8, played in jazz bands in my youth Got into using DAWs a couple years ago and using soft synths decided to take the plunge into hardware. Own 10 hardware synths, three Moogs a couple of Korgs and now Behringer synths.

Curtis Chip!

The fact that this synth has a Curtis chip in it is nothing short of a miracle. 25 years ago, I thought these things were gone forever. Real deal analog. Excellent for experimenting, fun and comparing to Repro, Diva etc. and it makes some very nice little melodies too. I'm glad that it borrowed heavily but wasn't a straight rip off of the Moog Mother 32.

Sound Sound Sound...

This little unit just sounds excellent. It's hard to make a bad sound with it. Really good synth for the money.
