This book is better than the Martian yet, it is still disappointing. The grammar was awful and made me cringe far too often than it should have. The writing was very jagged, nothing sounded smooth and nothing felt melodic. The prose was rough. The plot was well-outlined and the story was extremely intricate. Every piece of the puzzle did eventually fit into place which made the story at least a bit tolerable. Unfortunately, that was not enough to save this book from being almost terrible.

It's a fine read when turning your brain off... But I was left wanting more depth or emotion. The plot can be summarized as "space adventure my rock alien friend" and didn't grow much beyond that. All the other side characters were (comically) one dimensional.

What can I say that ISN'T spoilers? It's a first contact story unlike any I've seen before. If I ever needed more evidence that thinking things through logically, considering all the implications, and doing the hard math\science makes a better story I have it now. Thank you Weir AND CO. for one of the best hard sci-fi stories I've ever read. And that includes the Martian. There's so much I would love to take from this story to use in my own amateur attempts at writing. But copying! Argh. I could continue like this for some time so I'll stop here.

Andy Weir built a two-decade career as a software engineer until the success of his first published novel, The Martian, allowed him to live out his dream of writing full-time. He is a lifelong space nerd and a devoted hobbyist of such subjects as relativistic physics, orbital mechanics, and the history of manned spaceflight. He also mixes a mean cocktail. He lives in California.
