It does need a base. We used a 5 gallon bucket and filled it with sand we already had. It holds perfectly. The table is pub style so the 9ft was better than the 7.5 ft would've been. I guess I should have been warned by the price of this umbrella compared to others. At first glance it seemed like a well constructed umbrella, however that is not the case. I have only had this umbrella two weeks and already there are several issues. First, after opening and closing only a handful of times, the crank does not work properly. It will make a cranking noise however the umbrella does not move. After cranking it for a few minutes it will finally catch and go in the direction you are trying to go. Second, the water comes right through this umbrella while it’s raining. It’s as though the material is not thick enough and lets the rain seep through. Lastly, there is already a tear in the material. There is no reason this should have happened after only two weeks. Save your time and money and purchase one that is slightly more expensive and better constructed.

Only used it for a week so far. Seems to handle the breeze better then the normal solid fabric w/o sections. 11ft is great coverage. Handled a light rain, with no water entering thru the sectioned material. Only time will tell if it lasts for next summer. The crank handle does seems a little flimsy. It’s a wait and see. Otherwise it seems sturdy and we are enjoying it.

**. Update: The umbrella has been great. Works so much better in a light breeze then the solid no tier ones. Only thing is the crank feels like its slipping on pully now when opening it but still working. Hope it lasts for next summer. Looks great.
