FREE firewood and Christmas trees.

The USDA Forest service will allow you to cut a Christmas tree and/or cut your own firewood if used for personal use by just paying a very inexpensive (for most) permit. As an example I randomly went to the Daniel Boone National Forest web site and found that the pass there costs is just $20! Actually most National forests allow you, without a permit, to collect Fruits & Nuts, Pine Cones, Mushrooms, and Wood for campfires (while camping).
The USDA Forest Service, after paying for your permit, will allow you to cut up to 10 cords of wood "per household" of downed or dead trees. At an average (around here) price of about $150 per cord, this would be a savings of $1,500!
There are 155 national forests and you will need to contact your regional office of the USDA forest service for more information and the cost for a permit. Just go to www.fs.fed.us. Click on the State and then the forest you plan to visit, and click "passes and permits". Hope you like my signature.
